It's easy to notice that the desire to stand out from others of the same species is inherent in human nature. A stylish haircut, fashionable clothes, a good car. We also don't want to live like everyone else. We seek interesting arrangements, extraordinary additions to showcase the individualism of interiors. But if we have the opportunity, already in the planning stage of building a house, or its renovation, we think about creating a unique home that will immediately captivate from the outside. We look for inspiration in historic manors, townhouses, palaces, counting on the timeless charm of exterior stucco, adapting it to our ideas of a beautiful home.
Stucco, which found application in ancient architecture, became widespread in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and is once again triumphant in contemporary construction. Stucco consists of decorative elements made of highly hardened styrofoam with suitable exterior coatings. Due to its application, it is distinguished into exterior and interior stucco. We will focus on the exterior type, which includes various types of mouldings, cornices, profiles, corbels, columns, etc. The core of exterior stucco elements is made of highly hardened styrofoam, while the external layer is a polymer-acrylic mass based on resins with the addition of quartz aggregate. This makes exterior stucco durable, resistant to mechanical damage, and changing weather conditions.
But can exterior stucco be painted? Certainly. If you opt for an intriguing or just a plain color for the stucco (a matter of taste and aesthetic sense), all you need is to buy special paint and prepare the decorative elements (stucco) for painting. Start by precisely cutting the profiles, then use mounting glue to attach the elements. The next step is to hide the joints using special adhesive and filler for stucco joints. If you want a better, more precise white or a completely different color, protect the walls with painter's tape, then cover the elements twice with the chosen paint. It is not recommended to prime the stucco beforehand; two coats of paint are sufficient.
First and foremost, use high-quality paints with high elasticity in a wide range of temperatures (e.g. STOCOLOR Dryonic). These should be paints that spread well, provide good coverage, do not peel, do not lose color, and can be used for painting the external walls and decorative elements of buildings. Silicone or acrylic exterior paints (water-based paints) are used. They are resistant to dirt, changing weather conditions, dry quickly, and do not absorb moisture. They belong to well-covering paints. Acrylic paints do not fade, generally silicone paints also, although this effect may occur with intense colors. There is a wide selection in terms of decorative effects (matte, glossy, semi-matte) with acrylic paints. Smooth, elastic surface – silicone paints. For a better effect, stucco can be painted twice. Both decorative elements covered with acrylic and silicone paint can be washed with water if dirty. Solvent-containing paints should not be used as they can damage the structure of the styrofoam, causing deformation.
Exterior stucco, properly chosen for the building's form, creatively arranged and highlighted (e.g., with color), provides extraordinary visual and aesthetic effects, adding character to the home.
