Decorative columns in the house - inspiration

Decorative columns in the house - inspiration

Ornamental columns in the house sound like an eccentric idea to draw attention to yourself? Not necessarily! Sometimes these types of elements are a necessity, on which depends, for example, the structural safety of the building. Then the columns are there to carry the weight of the upper floors of the building. But what if you want to add charm to the interior of your home, but do it with class? Here's how to use decorative columns for this purpose.

Inspiration for decorative columns - simple and minimalist also have their charm

Decorative columns in the interior of a house should be designed to fit in with the style of the interior and create an impression of harmony and order. Modern flats and houses do not usually feature clunky concrete columns, but rather columns of a particular colour, size or shape. All these parameters can influence their elegance and thus the aesthetics of the entire interior.

Decorative columns can additionally be finished in any way desired. Any kind of decorative plaster, glass, ceramic or other decorative additions are particularly attractive. It is not necessary to cover the entire height of the column in this way. A decorated column head or base will also make an impression. There are solutions on the market to suit every taste or specific space - column cores are usually slender and rounded, but some are tapered towards the top, others straight or even widening towards the centre.

Decorative columns in the interior of the house - pretty but also functional

Apart from the fact that a column can serve an important function in the construction of the entire building, its functionality has a much broader dimension. It is not uncommon to use the inside of columns as shelves for books or small trinkets - of course, if such a support can be partially hollowed out. When you want to display a favourite painting or photograph - a decorative column will work perfectly for this purpose.

Decorative columns can also be successfully used in open-plan living areas. This will separate the dining room from the living room or kitchen without having to put up additional walls and visually close off the space.

Where will decorative columns work best in the house?

Although a suitably chosen support can be arranged in any interior, a more ornate version looks best among pieces that refer to a classical, even courtly style. Choosing a model with a decorative head in the antique style can, on occasion, complement other ornaments in this trend, such as figurines or crockery.

How does this look in modern architecture? Contrasts are often the focus nowadays, so when it comes to columns in the home, it is worth playing with colours a little. Such a decorative element will successfully break up a visually minimalist interior maintained in grey, white and black. It will work well in the living room, hallway, but also near the stairs.

Numerous inspirations for decorative columns also apply to complementing the façade and the building environment in general. They can then correspond with cornices or window ornaments. It is also always an additional element that can be decorated with climbing plants or luminous garlands, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

A well-fitted column is the key to successful decoration of a living room, study or terrace. Such elements are intended to discreetly enhance the character of the interior - after all, columns, pilasters or small stucco elements are commonly associated with luxury and sophistication. This effect can also be achieved by using columns in a minimalist, austere version.
